Almería Travel Guide:
Discover the Tabernas Desert and Mini Hollywood
When you think of western movies, you might imagine Arizona or Texas — but did you know some of the most famous films were actually shot in southern Spain? Just north of the city of Almería lies the Tabernas Desert, Europe’s only true desert, where dusty landscapes and cinematic history come together.
Here, you’ll find Mini Hollywood, Fort Bravo, and Western Leone — film sets turned theme parks that let you step straight into a Sergio Leone movie.
Whether you’re a film buff, a lover of wild landscapes, or just looking for a unique day trip in Andalusia, the Tabernas Desert is a must-visit.
A Short History of the Tabernas Desert
The Tabernas Desert is a striking badlands region shaped over millions of years. Once a seabed, it transformed into today’s arid landscape of gullies, ridges, and ramblas (dry riverbeds). Protected as a natural park since 1989, it’s valued for both its geological importance and its breathtaking scenery.
With less than 250 mm of rain a year, its harsh yet cinematic terrain quickly caught the eye of filmmakers in the late 1950s.
From Hollywood to “Mini Hollywood”
In the 1960s, the Tabernas Desert became famous worldwide during the Spaghetti Western boom. Sergio Leone filmed his iconic Dollars Trilogy here, starring Clint Eastwood. Soon after, blockbusters like Lawrence of Arabia, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Game of Thrones, and even Black Mirror followed.
To bring these stories to life, Italian set designer Carlo Simi built a full western town for For a Few Dollars More. After filming wrapped, the set was preserved and eventually turned into Mini Hollywood (Oasys Park) — a Western-themed attraction complete with:
Authentic wild west streets and saloon doors
Daily cowboy stunt shows
A classic saloon & Western hotel
A zoological reserve and swimming pool for families
Nearby, Fort Bravo/Texas Hollywood and Western Leone offer additional movie-set experiences, with horse shows and re-enactments.
